Shani and Darci met in 2010 in a young adult novel writing class in New York City. Each were working on very different projects at the time. During the second class, rather than hand in the single chapter that was due, Shani submitted her entire novel with a cheeky grin. "If anyone feels like a little extra reading," she said, "I'd love the feedback." Darci was procrastinating something or other at the time, and Shani's first chapter quickly turned into two, which turned into... the entire book in one sitting. They became fast friends, workshopping various writing projects together.

A few years later the two were out for dinner and Darci, who may have been questioning her career choices at that particular moment, posed a question. "Hey Shani, what would you have done differently if you'd known your destiny? Not—like—everything you were supposed to do. But just the Very Most Important Thing?"

They immediately launched into a long conversation. A world was imagined. Characters were created. And Darci and Shani parted that night both a little dazed, wondering if this might be a story they wanted to tell together.

As it so happens, it was.
